Artist Statement
I sang to the trees as a little girl. When I was upset, I disappeared into the woods. Away from my problems and completely alone, I took a deep breath. Everything’s ok.
My work explores the interactions between people and landscape. Spending time outside is scientifically proven to lower risk of depression, speed up stress recovery, and overall strengthen mental capacity. With this in mind, it’s important to note how you feel and let yourself feel it. Bring your own experiences to my work and ponder how it makes you feel.
My process begins outside the studio and doesn’t involve painting at all. I go on hikes and take pictures. Through these experiences, I am exploring themes of self-reflection, memory, and coming to terms with turmoil.
After fun in the sun, I pour over my camera roll to find images to base my painting. Then I determine substrate, media, and stylistic approach depending on my mood and if I want it to be part of an existing series. After this, I take my time responding to composition, color, and mark-making.
Through this process, I am exploring mindfulness and embarking on a journey of self-discovery by disappearing into the trees once again.
